This series contemplates pattern as a possible trigger or reflection of a meditative state.
As Spadina Museums Artist in Residence, I crossed the threshold of the Historic House and allowed its history, architecture and presence to impact my work. For these drawings, I asked the individuals working at Spadina to recreate the poses found in the photographic archives of particular family members who lived in the house over the years. The drawings are also layered with decorative patterns taken from the house, but here are reinterpreted.
This series explores the subtlety of communication through gesture. By focusing almost exclusively on the gestures of hands, these drawings capture quiet, yet poignant moments of exchange and interaction. These drawings highlight the expressiveness and sensitivity of the hands, but also reveal something about the intangible aspects taking place in communication.
This ongoing series of drawings on three-dimensional wooden supports plays with the tensions that exist between our physical reality and our consciousness acknowledging the perplexing gaps, protrusions, overlaps and disruptions that occur between what we see solidly before us and our own perceptions of it. These drawings are about the visible and invisible exchanges we have with the world around us.
Gesture explores the idea of communication through the gestures of the hand. This work draws the viewer into a one-sided conversation, however, the meaning being conveyed is uncertain and open ended. Gesture was exhibited at Diaspora Vibe in Miami and Anna Leonowens in Halifax.
Release is a series of drawings about the visible and invisible exchanges we have with others and the world around us, particularly through gesture. These works attempt to make visible the gesture of release. Works from this series have been exhibited in Toronto and the Niagara region.
drifts is a series of large scale charcoal drawings focused on the idea of drifting. The experience of drifting is a mental space one enters when momentarily suspended between conscious awareness and the edge of a daydream.
